Live-shopping marketplace Whatnot says buyers on its app now purchase four Pokémon cards every second on average, in its 2027 Consumer Trends Report published October 20, 2026. The report credits Pokémon's 30th anniversary for a record month in September and a wave of first-time card buyers.

Whatnot Consumer Trends Report: key card facts

  • Report: Whatnot 2027 Consumer Trends Report, published October 20, 2026
  • Pokémon pace: four cards sold per second on average
  • Record month: more than 10 million Pokémon cards sold in September 2026, an all-time monthly high on Whatnot
  • Growth: order volume and the buyer community both more than doubled year over year (stated in the Pokémon section; the report doesn't say whether this counts Pokémon alone)
  • New buyers: "hundreds of thousands" of first-time Pokémon buyers, which Whatnot links to the anniversary
  • Most searched Pokémon in 2026: Pikachu, then Charizard, Eevee, Gengar and Mewtwo
  • Not included: prices, dollar sales for any card game, or figures for other games apart from one Magic: The Gathering comparison

What the report says about cards

According to Whatnot, Pokémon's anniversary drove the franchise's biggest sales week of the summer on the platform, then the record September. Sellers reported strong demand for special art cards, vintage cards, raw (ungraded) cards and rare chase cards.

The report also points to crossovers as the next source of new collectors. Its one example: Magic: The Gathering's The Hobbit Universes Beyond set sold five times as much as Magic's in-universe sets on Whatnot in August and September. Outside card games, Whatnot says more than 100 million sports cards have sold on the platform so far in 2026, and Toys & Hobbies orders grew 140%.

For context on scale, Whatnot says its live sales passed $8 billion worldwide in 2025 across all categories, and that it is on pace to more than double that in 2026.

How to read these numbers

These are Whatnot's own platform figures, published in a trends report that also promotes the company. They describe activity on one marketplace, not the whole hobby, and they don't say what any card sold for. A rise in the number of cards sold can come from more cheap cards changing hands as easily as from higher prices, so the report isn't a price signal by itself.

What it means for collectors

More buyers and sellers on live-shopping apps means more places to find the cards you want, and more places where it pays to slow down. Before you bid in a live auction, check what similar cards have actually sold for; our 5-minute price check shows how. And if you're buying sealed product or singles from a seller you don't know, our guide to spotting fake cards and resealed packs covers the warning signs.

What's next

Whatnot expects new Pokémon collectors to stay active into 2027 as anniversary releases continue through the holiday season. That is the company's forecast, not a measured result, so we'll look for actual sales data as it comes out.
